CFCA Applauds Bipartisan House Vote to Halt California’s Gas Car Ban, Rallies Senate to Act

Sacramento, CA - May 1, 2025

The California Fuels & Convenience Alliance (CFCA) applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing a resolution to revoke California's waiver under the Clean Air Act, which permits the state to enforce a ban on the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035. The resolution, introduced by Rep. John Joyce (R-PA), passed with a bipartisan vote of 246-164, including support from 35 House Democrats, 2 of them from California – Representatives Lou Correa and George Whitesides.

CFCA urges the U.S. Senate to take swift action in passing the resolution. It is highly important to maintain consumer choice and economic stability. California's mandate could lead to increased vehicle costs, strain the electric grid, and disproportionately affect low-income communities.

"The House's decision to block California's gas car ban is a pivotal moment for our industry and consumers alike,” said Elizabeth Graham, CEO of CFCA. “This action aligns with the core discussions planned for our upcoming California Energy Summit in Washington, D.C., on June 10. The summit will bring together industry leaders to address the challenges posed by such mandates and to advocate for balanced, achievable energy policies that consider both environmental goals and economic realities."

Scheduled for June 10, 2025, at The Morrow Hotel in Washington, D.C., the California Energy Summit will convene stakeholders from various sectors, including agriculture, construction, trucking, and fueling industries. The summit aims to foster dialogue on California's energy policies and their national implications, providing a platform for collaborative solutions.

CFCA encourages the California delegates in the U.S. Senate to follow the example set in the House and recognize the potential economic and social impacts of California's gas car ban and to pass the resolution to revoke the state's waiver. A unified federal approach is essential to ensure equitable and practical energy policies across the nation.
